Hunger is surging across Gaza — and it’s impacting everyone.
The enclave’s nearly two million residents remain cut off from humanitarian aid, as borders stay sealed and relief efforts face violent obstruction. In recent weeks, hundreds of civilians have died, either from severe malnutrition or in attempts to reach food at aid distribution points, where they are being targeted by Israeli forces. United Nation officials and local doctors say the crisis is unlike anything they’ve seen since the war began in October 2023 and killed over 60,000 people.
U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres recently described Gaza as a “horror show” of devastation and starvation, marked by “a level of death and destruction without parallel in recent times.”
This isn’t just a children’s crisis — it’s a full-scale starvation emergency affecting all Gazans.
Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is sounding the alarm:
“A quarter of all young children and pregnant or breastfeeding women screened at our clinics last week were malnourished.”
And the broader population is not faring better. Nearly a third of Gaza’s people are going days without food, according to the World Food Programme. Basic medical supplies have run out. Water is scarce. Over 90% of hospitals are damaged or destroyed.
The humanitarian blockade is so severe that activists from Egypt, Libya, Algeria, and Morocco have launched an effort called “From Sea to Sea – A Bottle of Hope,” — sealing dry food like rice and lentils into 1-2 liter bottles and tossing them into the sea, praying the current will carry them to Gaza’s shores.
“It’s a symbolic cry against the blockade,” one participant wrote online, “a moral message to the people of Gaza that they are not alone.”
Why the Crisis Is So Severe
Since the war between Israel and Hamas broke out in 2023, humanitarian aid has become a point of contention. In March 2025, Israel halted all aid shipments into Gaza, citing security concerns and accusations that Hamas was diverting supplies, despite a lack of evidence for this claim. Even after partial aid resumed via the controversial US and Israel-backed organization Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), bottlenecks, restrictions, and Israeli attacks on aid sites have made the delivery of food nearly impossible.
The death toll from malnutrition continues to rise:
- At least 50 children have died from hunger-related causes since March (World Health Organization).
- Ten people died in a single day on July 23 from starvation, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
- More than 90% of hospitals are damaged or destroyed, leaving people without critical care.
- On July 20, Israeli forces reportedly shot nearly 100 civilians who were trying to retrieve flour from a U.N. aid truck.
- Medical workers report they have run out of antibiotics, IV fluids, and even basic painkillers
- Aid and hospital workers are starving.
- Another flotilla filled with aid has been intercepted and the crew aboard have been abducted.
